Passport to Local Farms Weekend is August 28-29

You may have read about the New Hampshire Department of Agriculture’s newest program which celebrates the 2010 NH Eat Local Month. It is called Passport to Local Farms and is occurring the same weekend as the fair. Our farm sent in the paperwork and is now on the list of participating farms along with Sallie’s Fen Alpacas which will be here at the fair all weekend too.

Visitors can get stickers on their passport game card from us and Sallie’s Fen during the fair. You must visit at least four farms and collect four stickers to be eligible to enter a prize drawing in September. There are at least two other farms close by in Lee that are participating as well. You have all weekend to visit these farms. To download the passport and farm list go to: www.nheatlocal.org

During the fair on Sunday August 29th we will have fresh roasted pork for you to taste complimentary of a very generous and anonymous donor. The pork comes from a local farm.

Working steer demonstration Sunday

It is almost fair time! We are tying up loose ends and rounding up volunteers to help in the three hours shifts for parking and also for the set up Friday afternoon and breakdown Monday late afternoon.

Working Steer Demonstration: Sunday, August 29th, the Allen Family of Lee will bring their working steers and have them pull logs out of the woods.

Amy will talk about bees at the fair

Appreciating Honey Bees in the Garden & Ecosystem

Amy Antonucci will talk about the goodness honey bees bring to our gardens and to all of our world. We will peer into the darkness of the hive to look at the biology and society of these fascinating creatures. We will touch on the issues facing bees and other pollinators, why it matters to you and how you can help them.

Amy has been keeping bees for honey and pollination since 2005 and is Vice President of the Seacoast Beekeepers Association of NH. She has given talks at the NOFA-NH winter conference, libraries, schools and been interviewed on the radio about apiculture. She has worked in organic agriculture for over ten years, studies herbal medicine, and is a certified permaculture designer.

Dr Carroll will speak at 12 noon Saturday August 28th. His topic is to be determined as he decided to wait until closer to the event and speak about a relevant topic.

Amy Antonucci, apiarist, will give a talk Sunday on beekeeping.

The fair is coming together

The Barrington Recreation Department will be in charge of activities for children on Saturday and Sunday. They will have activities at 11am and 2pm on both days.

Scott Young, naturalist, will lead a nature hike each day sometime around 12 noon. Parents must accompany children during this 1-2 hour hike. Anyone can join the hike at any point or leave it at anytime. There will be a hike both days weather permitting.

The fair will be August 28th and 29th from 10-4pm at the Warren Farm, Barrington NH.
